Should we create social mixed residential areas?
Nowadays it's not uncommon to see areas where the social inequality becomes as clear as crystal. Places like Morumbi and Paraisopolis, only divided by a wall. But it's not just a physical barrier, it represents the huge disparity between the layers of society in Brazil. Thinking on that, should mixed residential areas be built, mixing rich and poor people in the same place? Would this project solve the major problem? How is it going to work in practice?
First of all, we should think of how this is actually going to happen. If we want to mix them, should consider how much a poor family can spend in a house, and how little a rich person is willing to pay for it, giving up a lot of his luxury for that. An affordable house for a poor person is definitely not attractive for a person who has his own collection of cars in a garage probably bigger than the affordable house itself.
Another point, is that exists, by far, a larger number of people living in a low condition, so the focus should be in elevating their condition first , by providing home, studies and sanitation for those people and not building some areas that just hide this contrast. As you give more opportunities for them to have better a quality of life, the distance, both physical and social, between the rich and poor people would naturally be reduced. So by doing that there will be no need to force an almost impossible mix in the current society.
In conclusion, we should approach this question with a broader view, taking into account that this project wouldn't solve the major problem in our society, it would just mask how overly big is our social inequality nowadays, and how it could be achieved by reducing the disparity.
I completely agree with you in the sense that we should not onl mix the residential areas, but increase the conditions of the poor people so that they can have better residences, this would cause less contrast between the rich and the "poor" people, so they can both live in good conditions.
